You will be based in one of our North American offices and will join our Sustainability practice. You will work with McKinsey colleagues who are actively solving strategic challenges in energy markets.In April 2021, we announced the launch of McKinsey Sustainability, our new client-service platform with the goal of helping all industry sectors transform to get to net zero by 2050 and to cut carbon emissions by half by 2030. McKinsey Sustainability seeks to be the preeminent impact partner and advisor for our clients, from the board room to the engine room, on sustainability, climate, energy transition, and environmental, social and governance (ESG). We are committed to invest behind this goal over the next four years-through our client service, knowledge and capability building, acquisitions and alliances as well as pro-bono investments.You will use your technical expertise to improve the efficiency of wind and solar projects.In this role you will work across a variety of industries, including utilities, the financial sector, and technology and distributed-energy resources providers. As an engineering expert, you will vet new technologies and bring a single source of knowledge to help our clients solve their toughest challenges.You will use your deep analytics experience and understanding of energy markets to develop strategies around renewable energy, decarbonization, and storage valuation. Serving as a translator between McKinsey's analytics group, clients, and clients' energy modelers, you will communicate how the models work, navigate complex analytics topics, and synthesize the results so clients understand the challenges they face and the overall strategy and direction.Along with your team, you will build strategies that allow utility companies to transition away from fossil fuels and shift their portfolio of generation assets to low-cost renewables. You will help leading technology and distributed-energy resources providers understand the minute-by-minute demand of a new market, meet customer needs, and drive growth. You will also conduct due diligence for investors who want to invest in renewables.Lastly, you will help drive McKinsey's knowledge development and reputation as a leader in sustainability and assist with design and development of proprietary energy-modeling tools.* Master's degree in data analytics or related field* 6+ years of experience in power modeling for real-world applications* Expertise in decarbonization pathways, clean technology, renewable integration, and storage valuation* Expertise in energy-market dynamics, design, and regulation* Ability to interpret data and communicate results to high-level executives* Ability to work collaboratively in a team and create an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization* Capability to drive an independent workstream in the context of a broader team project
